Newspapers obtain ‘additional’ material in alleged war crimes defamation case

Fresh evidence from a witness known as Person 18 could be introduced to support news articles alleging Australia’s most decorated living soldier committed war crimes while serving in the Middle East, a court has heard.

Victoria Cross recipient Bruce Roberts-Smith is suing newspapers The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times, and three journalists, for defamation over the series of articles published in 2018.

The Federal Court heard on Wednesday that discussions with Person 18 had revealed “additional aspects” of evidence…
